The Vikings’ defensive woes continued into the second quarter, as the Pirates’ elite receiving corps was consistently able to gain yardage in chunks. The Pirates scored on three of their first four offensive drives, jumping out to a 22-0 lead.
MHB’s offense found a spark in the second quarter. Owen Schultz came down with a miraculous 43-yard grab, snatching the ball right over a Pirates defender. Later that drive, Schultz made another fantastic grab, this time in the corner of the end zone to get the Vikings on the board. Eli Maier punched in the 2-point conversion, making the score 22-8 going into halftime.
The Vikings’ defense came alive in the second half. Following a 64-yard punt from Cullen Olsen, Henry Derosier came up with an interception to set up the Vikings in the red zone. Olsen was then the beneficiary of a 15-yard touchdown pass from Harvey Hellen, and the Vikings drew to within a score.
Port Washington pulled away from MHB, finding the end zone on the ensuing drive. The Pirates went on to win 36-14.
This was a learning experience for Mount Horeb/Barneveld. Port Washington sported a highly effective air raid offense, very different from Grafton’s ground-and-pound game that the Vikings saw the week prior. The Vikings were still able to fight back, finding some success both offensively and defensively as the game progressed. Through two weeks, MHB has played two high-caliber opponents and is well-situated heading into its rivalry matchup against Edgewood on Friday, September 4.
